Nether Wallop, one of the Hampshire beauty spots called 'The Wallops', is both a parish and village, situated in the NW. of Hampshire on the Wiltshire border. The village, on a tributary of the River Test, is central to the triangle formed by Andover 8 m NE; Winchester capital city of Hampshire 13 m SE; and Salisbury (and Old Sarum) capital city of Wiltshire 11 m SW; with Romsey 12 m SE, and a further 7 m to Southampton. All were places of strategic importance by Roman times. Adjoining the Test Valley 3½ m E at Stockbridge, with Salisbury Plain to the NW, the North Downs on its NE, and South is the New Forest and Southampton Water, its history and its character have been made by its geographical position. |
