Nether Wallop in Hampshire

Please note that this text is taken directly from the booklet 'Nether Wallop in Hampshire' by Dorothy Beresford - see disclaimer. MAP of Nether Wallop parish

The Parish of Nether Wallop is the second largest in Romsey and Stockbridge Rural District, in shape slightly resembling a truncated sheep, its neck at Old Lodge. The fact that its western parish and county boundaries coincide is confirmation of its existence in Saxon times.

It consists mainly of white chalk downs with many flints, their highest points being Isle of Wight Hill to the West, 458 ft, and Danebury Hill to the East, 470 ft above sea level.

Habitation has grown along the alluvial banks of the Wallop Brook in its sheltered valley. The stream enters the parish about 208 ft gently dropping between the downs to Nine Mile Water 158 ft above sea level, and flows on to join the Test.
