SUZANNE SHEREE YOUNG (Sue) was bom on 13
December 1964 at Queen Victoria Maternity Hospital,
Invercargill to parents Errol Ernest Stanley and Dawn
Ester (McCleery) Young. Sue was educated at Newfield primary school and later at Cromwell Primary. In 1975 Sue moved to Dunedin with her mother and attended Tomahawk Primary School, Tahuna Intermediate and later Bayfield High School. Suzanne left school in 1980 and worked as receptionist for the Otago Daily Times. In 1985 Suzanne went into partnership with her mother and stepfather in a dairy in North East Valley. Sue married Gordon Allan Davidson at the Gazebo Lounge of the University of Otago on 23 August 1986. Their first daughter, Stephanie Grace, was born on 30 March 1988. A second daughter, Phoebe Alice, arrived on 2 February 1991. Sue and Gordon divorced in 1997 and she then bought a house at 34 Warden Street, Opoho, Dunedin and moved there with her two daughters. Sue met Darryn Charles Buist and they had a daughter of their own, Georgia Alexandra Buist-Young who was born on 22 January 1996. Sue and Darryn married on 14 March 1998 at Waverly Presbyterian Church, Invercargill in a double wedding with her brother Gary David and Allison McDonald. The couples chose this double wedding because it was the 150th anniversary of Otago and Southland. According to their mother: "It was a great wedding. It was even on TV - they seemed to think that as they were brother and sister and both getting married for the second time, and with their costumes, etc. (see photo) that it was newsworthy. I even got interviewed because I was married for the second time as well. Everyone dressed up in similar style. The wedding ceremony, just for family and close friends , was held outside at Chingford Park. Leonie's four boys and Sue's three girls were attendants. I wrote the ceremony and I was also the MC at the dinner afterwards. Stephanie and Kevin both recited poems at the service. It was a really nice day." Sue has reverted to her maiden name of Young and she spends her time teaching children and young adults about drug abuse and responsibility, road safety, crime prevention and social responsibility and violence prevention. Sue also visits school camps and carries out search and rescue exercises with the children. Sue enjoys basketball, netball and volleyball and has always been a keen player, making the Otago team in her younger days, and encourages her children to participate in sport as well. In her spare time she enjoys keeping fit. All three children are learning to play the piano and the two oldest girls are already playing with confidence and style. |
