SHIRLENE JENNIFER YOUNG was bom at Tuatapere on 19 May 1960 to parents William Stuart and Jennifer May (Lee) Young. She attended Riverton Primary, Secondary and Timaru Girls High School and on leaving was employed as an Office Clerk, Receptionist and Estimator.

Playing softball, she represented South Canterbury and she also represented South Canterbury U/21 at netball, as well as playing touch rugby, cycling, running and athletics.

She married Gary Douglas Manson in Timaru on 14 March 1980. The couple had two children - Hamish Gary was bom on 9 December 1982 and Hayley Jennifer was bom on 16 May 1985. Shirlene and Gary divorced in (when ?).

After a long period of being together, Shirlene married Mark Nossiter, a well-known and successful professional painter, on 24 December 2006 at Fleurs Place, a restaurant in Moeraki. She continues her career as a (relief) school teacher. The couple have taken over a farm (cows, sheep, chickens and two pigs) on Beaconsfield Road, Timaru. They now live in a 'barn', albeit somewhat luxurious, on the upper level of this xx hectare property. The original house of the property (at road level) is now the home of Stuart and Jenny Young, Shirlene's parents.
