KAREN LOUISE YOUNG was bom in Tuatapere on 22 June 1967 to parents William Stuart and Jennifer May (Lee) Young. She was educated at Riverton Primary, Main School Primary, Watlington Intemediate and Timaru Girls High School, where she was runner-up Dux. She attended Canterbury University in 1986, studying Mathematics but unfortunately left at the beginning of her second year. She then moved to Wellington where her husband (to-be) was working as a Trainee Actuary and she found employment with National Mutual.

Karen married Alan Robert Mooney in Timaru on 4 June 1988. They continued living in Wellington for another two years then on to Auckland where Karen continued working for NM in a newly opened regional office. After only one year they got itchy feet and moved further on to London, England on 17 July, 1991. Karen found temporary employment for Liberty Life which was the same company for which Alan was working.

After two years they were forced to move due to work permit restrictions and Alan landed a job in Amstelveen, the Netherlands. Unfortunately, the expected permit for Karen to work did not materialise.

Karen and Alan separated in August 1996 and divorced in October 2000. She had moved in with her partner Clive Pollard, a biochemist and freelance technical writer, first in a small apartment in Hillegom, then later the couple moved to a rented house in Hoofddorp.

Karen married Clive on 31 July 2002, with Karen retaining her maiden name. Their son Remi was born on 15 September 2002, with Remi also as a Young.

After having lived in the Netherlands for three years, Karen was granted a work permit. She found a 6-month contract at a large engineering company ABB as a project control assistant which turned into a permanent position. From here she got a good breakthrough into Management Accounting and gained enough experience to move to a new company in April 2000 as Management Accountant with CBI (formerly Chicago Bridge and Iron, now based in Houston, Texas), another engineering company that builds mainly large storage tanks for petroleum products and water. They have contracts in Russia, Algeria, Spain and many other parts of the world. CBI's Hoofddorp office (some 5 km from home at that time) was severely reduced in staff numbers (and more recently office space).

Due to work opportunities within CBI, Karen and family moved to Perth, Australia in February 2004, where they live in the northern suburb of Kingsley. Karen is Financial Accountant for CBI Constructors in Perth's CBD.

Karen's earlier sporting achievements were representing South Canterbury at various junior levels in athletics, softball, badminton and basketball, South Canterbury U/16 and U/18 rep in netball. She represented South Canterbury, Wellington, Southern Districts, NZ Universities and Auckland at tennis. Since moving to Europe, she ran the 1993 London Marathon in a time of 4.5 hours. In her squash career, she reached a high level in Europe, being a member of the professional association for women, WISPA, for a year and reaching a world ranking of 96, before finding it too hard to combine her work with all the training required. In 2000 she came 4th in the Dutch National Championships, after qualifying as a foreign resident by living in the country for more than 5 years. She won the local club championships on many occasions, at singles, mixed and women's doubles.

After moving to Perth, Karen's squash career finally ceased, when she was ranked in the top 10 in WA, by an injury to her anterior cruciate ligament, involving knee reconstruction. She has yet to recover fully from this injury, but has played a little tennis recently.

The family live at 56 Chessington Way, Kingsley, WA.
