| HARRY SEPTIMUS YOUNG was bom on 19 January
1891 to parents James Hair and
Harriet Lillias
(Aitken) Young. He was educated ? He married Winnifred Henderson on 2 December 1914 (where ?) and they lived in Georgetown, Invercargill. Harry worked for the Post and Telegraph Department. After two or three years, their home was totally destroyed, in their absence, by fire (when ?) and so they set up house at 318 Herbert Street. Here they began a poultry farm, but after several years, the whole flock died with a disease (when ?). They then made use of a small glasshouse to grow plants, for a retail shop owned by Thomas Bros. This business grew until the association with Thomas's concluded (when ?) and they began selling plants to the public from the Herbert Street property. The turnover grew and in (when ?) 1934 they opened a shop in Esk Street, managed by several different managers until 1945, when their only son Bevan came home from his training in Christchurch and took over the Managing of the business that they had called H.S. Young Ltd. Harry and Winnie then moved to Marama Avenue, Otatara (when ?) and from that time ceased to take any further active interest in the gardening firm. For the next few years they enjoyed commuting between Otatara and their holiday crib, at Hallenstein Street, Queenstown, where Harry played bowls, and took up ice skating at the age of 70. Some years later (when ?), they sold their Otatara home and moved to Salford Street, Invercargill until their health failed and they needed hospital and PSSA home care. Harry died on 21 September 1974 and Winnie died on 21 June 1976. The couple had one son - Bevan Lyall was born on 31 August 1923 (where ?). |
