Ethel Joyce Young 1923- |

| ETHEL JOYCE YOUNG was bom at Riverton on 7
November 1923 as the only child of Thomas
Hudson and Margaret
Ethel (Garden) Young. She was educated at Waihoaka School
which was situated on the western perimeter of her
father's farm. On leaving school she helped her parents
on the farm and also worked as a shop assistant for H.
& J. Smith Ltd in Invercargill before her marriage. She married Colin McGregor Erskine on 28 August 1949 (where ?). Ethel and Colin had two children - Janice Yvonne was born on 28 March 1950 (where ?) and Donald Thomas was born on 6 May 1955 (where ?). Music has always been a major part of her life, especially playing the piano, and as the children grew and developed so did their interest in music, playing various instruments - piano, piano accordion, melodica, ukulele, glockenspiel, tambourine, and drums. A family group emerged and they have performed at many functions throughout Southland and South Otago. Sadly this group disbanded on the death of Colin on 22 July 1974 (where ?) at the age of 50 years. Joyce's love of travel and outdoors has enabled her to continue her enjoyment of the family holiday home at Queenstown, which was built of steel by Colin in 1960. Joyce is Life Member of the Ceilidh Society and the Invercargill Ulster Society and is still an active committee member of both these societies. Her current interest is landscape painting, which she thoroughly enjoys. Joyce lives at 3 Moana Street, Invercargill. |
