| ERNEST JOHN YOUNG was bom at Waihoaka on 4
August 1888 to parents James
Hair and Harriet
Lillias (Aitken) Young. He
attended the Waihoaka school, then worked on the family
farm, before taking up an apprenticeship with Jacob
Carlson, a builder in Tuatapere. In 1916 (when ?) he married Ethel May Grey at Tuatapere. Along with thousands of others throughout NZ, he lost his life to the Great Flu epidemic of 1918, on 28 November 1918, Ethel was left a widow, with two very small sons - Norman William John was born on 24 October 1916 and Stanley Ernest was born on 1 October 1918. Ethel was well known in Tuatapere for practically the rest of her life and she ran a boarding house for many years. Tragedy intervened her life again during World War U, both sons losing their lives in battle. Norman was killed in Vella LaveRa, Solomon Islands, and Stanley (Tanny) in the Egyptian Alamein campaign. Ethel died on 28 August 1983 (where ?). |
