ELIZABETH YOUNG (Elsie) was bom on 18 February 1895 in Invercargill to parents James Hair and Harriet Lillias (Aitken) Young. Elsie is mainly remembered for her interest in music, for her devotion and interest in patriotic activities, and for her love of people.

Elsie was the youngest daughter in a family of 10 children, and she was raised and worked on the family farm in her early years. She later worked as a typesetter at the Orepuki newspaper "The Advocate".

At the age of 28 (when ?) she married Stacey Alexander Walker and went to live in Tuatapere. They had four children - Elma was born on 21 December 1925 (where ?), Hugh Alexander was born on 8 December 1930 (where ?), Stacey MacGregor was born on (when ?) The early years of her marriage were naturally taken up with her children, but she also took an active interest in tennis and golf. She played the piano at the picture theatre for the silent movies, and daughter Elma has vivid memories of sitting beside her when very young and getting lost in the magical world of moving pictures, as Elsie played spooky, cowboy and Indian music, etc. She accompanied many of the local singers, played in concerts and for the local dancing teacher.

When World War II broke out, she became very involved in the local war effort, being a foundation member of the Red Cross Society. She was a strong supporter and worker for the Plunket Society, she was a Life Member of the Women's Section R.S.A., and an energetic worker for the Patriotic Society.

During the war years a band was formed with Reg Leonard, Roy and Billy Menpes and Elsie. Quite often they were joined by her niece, Nancy Young as well as Kevin Leonard and Leo Coombes. They played all over the district to farewell and welcome home the servicemen, as well as many other functions. There were nearly always one or two dances in the week for the war effort, and it was all voluntary.

Elsie and Stacey left Tuatapere in 1956 and built a home on Rata Road, Otatara where they lived for 7 years, and then moved to Leet Street, where they spent the remainder of their years together. After Stacey's death on 9 December 1977 she went to live at George Street, with her memories, her love and interest in her family and grandchildren.
