YOUNG family history

Bevan Lyall Young 1923-

BEVAN LYALL YOUNG was bom on 31 August 1923 (where ?) to parents Harry Septimus and Winnifred (Henderson) Young. He was educated (where ?) and trained in (what ?) at (where ? Christchurch). On returning from his training in Christchurch, managed the H.S. Young Ltd nursery business.

The Esk Street business grew rapidly and opened, in (when ?) 1946, Bevan opened a floral shop in Dee Street, with a floral staff of seven girls. On 18 April 1950 Bevan married one of his florists, Betty Lenore MacDonald, and they lived at the Herbert Street property home with Betty continuing to assist at the nursery.

In (when ?) 1960 the Herbert Street Nursery was sold and Bevan and Betty moved to 478 North Road, with their family, continuing the Esk Street business. This business continued to grow until Bevan opened 'Lynwood Drive-In Garden Centre' at 200 North Road, Invercargill on 23 September 1965. But this had very little effect on the customer flow at the Esk Street shop which meant that larger premises were necessary. On 20 August 1968 the firm bought the J.R. McKenzies building in Dee Street and also consolidated the Floral Department into these premises.

Because of changing business patterns, a second Garden Centre type operation was opened, at 660 Tay Street on 21 July 1978. The city property was at the time leased to Sharps Clothing.

As their family business became independent Bet resumed her job assisting in the Floral Department at North Road. Recently Bevan and Bet retired from the Garden business, which had been in the family for 75 years, and now live at Kawarua Falls (address ?).

Bevan and Betty have four children - Lindsay Ross was born on 22 February 1952 (where ?), Robyn Gay was born on 22 July 1954 (where ?), Roger Bevan was born on 3 June 1957 (where ?) and Graeme MacDonald was born on 4 June 1960 (where ?).
